Reference: Am J Psychiatry 2000;157:124-6.
Purpose: Comparing the addition of an antidepressant versus a second mood stabilizer for the treatment of bipolar depression in patients treated with lithium carbonate or divalproex sodium.
Study design: Randomized, double-blinded trial.
Follow up: 6 weeks.
Patients: 27 patients.
Treatment: Paroxetine or second mood stabiliser.
Results: Both treatment groups showed significant improvement in depressive symptoms during the 6-week trial.
